About Sound Kitchen

Sound Design, Performance, Research and Collaboration

"A sound designer can attain perception of pin-drop silence as well as shake the foundation of the architecture, and everything in between. What makes effective sound design is intention."
— Victoria Deiorio, The Art of Theatrical Sound Design (2018)

Imagine a world without sound. How do you feel?

Sound Kitchen is a platform for sound designers and composers working across every kind of sound and performance. They come together to connect, collaborate, and present or perform their work publicly in a space designed for listening.

Sound Kitchen builds an inclusive international community of sound designers and artists. It gives them a chance to share and learn the trends and methods their peers use around the world. It is also an open, enjoyable event for audiences at World Stage Design and the Prague Quadrennial (PQ), including people who don't work in sound. They can discover sound design, sonic art and research, and see the place sound holds in design and scenography.

Presentations include live performances, demonstrations, research outcomes, and playback of finished or ongoing work. Each one usually runs 10 to 20 minutes and is followed by a short discussion. Every edition aims to spark new collaborations across the community.

Sound Kitchen 2027: Prague

8–12 June 2027 · Archa+ Upstairs, Prague

Sound Kitchen 2027 is part of the official Prague Quadrennial programme for the first time, as part of PQ Studio. It will feature theatrical sound design from the past four years alongside new sonic art and performance pieces premiered at the event. New work is encouraged to respond to the Quadrennial's theme: Absences and Silences as a space of potential for new scenography futures.

The venue will have a multi-speaker spatial sound system driven by TiMax SoundHub, so playback and live performance can be placed precisely in the space. Alongside the Sound Kitchen sessions, a programme of workshops and talks will invite all PQ visitors, not only sound specialists, to listen, make and explore.

Taking part in Sound Kitchen 2027

Submissions for Sound Kitchen 2027 are made through the PQ Studio open call on the Prague Quadrennial website, not through this site.

We welcome proposals for:

  • Theatrical sound design from productions made in the past four years

  • New sonic art or performance pieces to premiere at the event. New work is encouraged to respond to the PQ 2027 theme, Absences and Silences as a space of potential for new scenography futures.

Presentations can be live performances, playback pieces, installations or research outcomes. They usually run 10 to 20 minutes, followed by a short discussion. Archa+ Upstairs will have a multi-speaker TiMax SoundHub spatial sound system, so please say in your proposal how your piece would use it.

Sound Kitchen has no budget of its own. All costs of presenting, including travel and accommodation, are covered by the entrant, so please consider this before you apply. By taking part, you give the host permission to photograph and film for promotional purposes.

Submissions open soon via PQ Studio.
