Carlos Montalvo - loading, scheming…

About: Born and raised in Madrid, Spain, Carlos was interested in music and sound from very early on. He studied classical piano from age 5 onwards and began composing music at age 16, eventually graduating in Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid. As part of the degree’s requirements he started making small electronic pieces, which sparked his interest for electronic music and media. Besides music, he is also very interested in theatre, having worked as both an actor and a musical director for different amateur theatre and musical theater companies.

Piece: loading, scheming... is a piece about the idea of information loading and the possibilities existing within that moment of loading, both literally and metaphorically. This includes an exploration of the concepts of repetition and non-repetition: processes read from the outside as repetitive, that truly aren’t. The piece also takes into account other related ideas: failed loading, glitching, the hope to get something, interrupted when the machine "decides" it’s not going to happen. Within this context, the sounds of a computer overheating as it tries to accomplish all of the tasks we ask of it have contributed as inspiration to the general soundscape of the piece.
